Two men sat together on a bench. One loved a woman because he was lonely. The other loved a woman because he was ill. “I am by myself all day,” said the first. “I have no distractions. Of all thoughts, she is the most beautiful I can conceive. So I ceaselessly fill my mind with her until nothing else exists. A world together with her alone is the best of all possible.” The second nodded. “I am in pain all the time. When it becomes intolerable, I close my eyes and for a brief moment I only feel her. Then there is no pain. Then death does not speak to me.” After a short silence, the two men rose and left the bench for what it was.
